Innovative Ventricular Assist Device

provides cardiac support without direct blood contact

Innovative Ventricular Assist Device. Consisting of a flexible polymer cup that can be installed around the heart in approximately three minutes, the Myo VAD (Ventricular Assist Device) is a novel cardiac assist device for treating acute and chronic heart failure by restoring blood flow. The device incorporates a pneumatically activated liner and operates by compressing and expanding bi-directionally providing the energy that allows the heart to achieve normal cardiac output. The technique is now in formal development on the road to commercialisation. This new VAD does not contact circulating blood, which means that it has the potential of significantly reducing or avoiding complications that are common to existing devices, such as stroke, bleeding and infection. Furthermore, the device pumps both left and right ventricles, assisting both the systolic and diastolic phases of pumping, and has the potential of restoring normal blood flow, even if the heart is fully arrested or fibrillating. Possible clinical applications include bridge-to-recovery, acute resuscitation, destination therapy (permanent support), bridge-to-transplant and therapeutic recovery.
