POC diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori

POC diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori. Heliprobe is a non-invasive diagnostic test kit for Helicobacter pylori. This bacterium infects around 50% of the world's population. It is recognised as the main aetiological factor for chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer and possibly also gastric malignancies. Much suffering, and even death-related ulcers can be easily prevented through accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment with antibiotics. Heliprobe is an accurate urea breath test system for primary diagnosis and for post-treatment follow-up of Helicobacter pylori infection. Easy to use at the point of care, invasive sampling is not necessary for analysis. Most importantly, there is also no need for invasive gastroscopic tubing. Complex and expensive test equipment is unnecessary; the analysis is performed on site. The patient has only to swallow the HeliCap, a capsule which contains 1μCi 14C-labelled urea. The radioactive dose is very low, significantly less than the dose given during a normal X-ray. Ten minutes after the HeliCap is swallowed, the patient exhales on to the BreathCard, which is then inserted into the Heliprobe Analyser, a small desktop GM counter. Test results are available within 5 minutes. Heliprobe has 95% sensitivity and 100% specificity.
